Class 8

Read the information that follows. In order to benefit the most from this course, you must constantly keep the following points in mind and refer to them frequently: (1) 50 years after the writing of Black Skin, White Masks, Black People in the United States still perceive of their potential and capabilities within an unnaturally or abnormally limited context. (2) The psychological molding of Black People predisposes the best educated among Us to be anti-Black: anti-Black nationalism, anti-Black centric, anti-Black whatever. (3) In addition to being victims of racism, Black People in the United States demonstrate all of the qualities of a people who have been victimized by colonialism.

This class will concentrate on selected excerpts from Black Skin, White Masks and analyze the logic or lack of logic suggested by a variety of responses of Black People to white racism and white power. Think about the following issues as you study and learn.
(1) If a group of people develop an illogical modus operando (manner of operating), is it rational to use logic to refute their claims?
(2) Can history be used to save a people or change the present?
(3) What does weeping indicate? Can it have a psychological component?

Lesson 8: Black Responses to White Racism: Sensible or Psychopathic?

p. 116 I move slowly in the world, accustomed now to seek no longer for upheaval. I progress by crawling. And already I am being dissected under white eyes, the only real eyes. I am fixed.
This is a perfect example of submission, one of the frequent responses of Black individuals whose psyche has been impaired. Upheaval is quite often the key to progress, but certain Blacks spurn upheaval. Crawling is an activity that is not associated with human advancement, but it is acceptable to Blacks who are literally "out of their mind" (ergo, no longer human). And, needless to say, a Black person who concludes that the only real eyes are white people's eyes has accepted his/her lack of humanity and is fixed, unable to go beyond what white people have made Black People into. Fanon continues:
p. 116 I slip into corners, I remain silent, I strive for anonimity, for invisibility. Look, I will accept the lot as long as no one notices me!
What a pitiful excuse for a human this person has become! Rather than insisting on his/her legitimacy, s/he accepts white superiority and Black inferiority, and tiptoes through life trying to draw as little attention to him/herself as possible. Such individuals are sick, beyond question. Unfortunately, their sickness does not keep them from being despicable!

p. 119 After much reluctance, the scientists had conceded that the Negro was a human being; in vivo and in vitro the Negro has been proven analogous to the white man
The mere presence of an individual is irrefutable proof that s/he is human. The fact that an individual could be so distressed that s/he would turn to science to prove his/her humanness is indicative that that person is seriously ill. It is not logical to refer to science in order to respond to a totally illogical assertion. The individual who does so is more or less out of his/her mind.
When it comes to the subject of white superiority, no reasoned agreement will ever be possible because white people have to believe they are better than everybody else. To deal with their lack of reason as if it has merit is to play the role of the fool, the idiot or the imbecile.
p. 130 I rummaged frenetically through all the antiquity of the [B]lack man. What I found there took away my breath... The white man was wrong, I was not a primitive, not even a half-man, I belonged to a race that had already been working in gold and silver two thousand years ago
Normal people refer to their history to learn about themselves, their collective strengths, collective weaknesses, accomplishments and contributions to the collective development of humanity. History is valuable because it is instructive, not because it is therapeutic or has healing powers. For that reason, normal people do not refer to their history in order to prove that they are the developmental equals of others, or to prove that they are not inferior. Nor do normal people refer to history (their operational level in the past) as proof of their present operational level. The two have nothing to do with one another.
A people's past is not representative of that people's present. What happened in a people's past can not save or destroy that people today. What a people accomplished 4000 years ago will not have an impact on what that people accomplish today.
Knowledge of the past makes one aware of what one CAN do. Whether or not one actually does what s/he is capable of doing will be determined by how that person functions or operates TODAY! It is illogical to refer to a people's history to prove that people's PRESENT level of function or dysfunction.
p. 126 Yes, we are-we Negroes-backward, simple, free in our behavior. That is because for us the body is not something opposed to what you call the mind... your white civilization overlooks subtle riches and sensitivity.
p. 129 I made myself the poet of the world. The white man had found a poetry in which there was nothing poetic. The soul of the white man was corrupted... "The presence of the Negroes beside the whites is in a way an insurance policy on humanness"

Some Black individuals turn to ill-advised philosophical arguments to prove the worthiness of Black People. For example, they try to show that Blacks are capable in areas where whites are lacking, and the total comes together to make a human balance. This is the equivalent of admitting that white assertions about Black People are valid. When Black individuals are so intent on proving their value to whites that they overlook their essential qualities, they do not act as sensible individuals act.
p. 140 I wanted to rise, but the disemboweled silence fell back upon me, its wings paralyzed. Without responsibility, straddling Nothingness and Infinity, I began to weep.
Weeping. That is the strategy of the most psychologically frail individual, the individual who is most convinced of the superiority of whiteness, the inferiority of Blackness and his/her lack of worth. It must be understood that weeping is not just the shedding of tears. Weeping is, above all, the acceptance of the proposition that Black People are forever at the mercy of white people. It is the acceptance of the proposition that the destiny of Black People is in the hands of white people, and white people alone. A Black person who is in that frame of mind has lost control of his/her senses.
