Class #4

Read "We Changed" (p. 59 of Not To Be). Read "On The Way To The Nuthouse" (p. 56 of The Black Studies Book).

(1) What do these two essays have to do with each other?

(2) On page 61 of Not To Be, the phrase "real equality" is used. What is "real equality"?

(3) Can't Blacks and whites work toward the objectives of integration just as effectively if they were citizens of separate, independent governments? If both parties are sincere about integration, why is integration so closely linked to the American status quo?

(4) The following paragraph is taken from p. 87 of Not To Be. What is the importance of the "subconscious" nature of the decision many Black individuals made?

"The Civil Rights movement, as a Black movement, began in the 1830s, in the transitional period that was discussed earlier. It is during this period that most Black persons in the United States subconsciously decided that they didn't want to fight anymore; at least, not on terms that immediately brought out the worst in white people. Henceforward, Our ultimate human and political tights would be temporarily de-emphasized; We would not demand true equality, self-government or anything of the sort. Black People would let white people rule and, later, restrict the Black struggle to seeking access to the rights and privileges that were due Us as constitutional citizens of the United States. Black People would seek objectives more along white people's terms that Our own. Black People would surrender, but with some minor concessions in Our favor."
