Class #1

From The Black Studies Book, read "Black Leadership: What Is It?" (p. 169) and "Toward An Understanding of Africa" (p. 158). Be able to expound on the following.

(1) What is your opinion of the six qualities that characterize a leader?

(2) With those six qualities in mind, can you imagine how a "pretender leader" might present himself/herself?

(3) Why is "Toward An Understanding of Africa" relevant to an understanding of Black leadership in the United States?

(4) In "Black Leadership: What Is It?" (p. 171), the following appears. What do you think?

"People must always view their leaders as everyday men and women who are flawed just like everybody else. Leaders are not great unless people make them great, they are not charismatic unless people support them, they do not know anything that anybody else can't learn, they don't have a special relationship with Nature or natural forces (religions' 'God'), and they are going to end up just like everybody else ends up (pushing daisies)."
