Class 11
Read the information that follows. In order to benefit the most from this course, you must constantly keep the following points in mind and refer to them frequently: (1) 50 years after the writing of Black Skin, White Masks, Black People in the United States still perceive of their potential and capabilities within an unnaturally or abnormally limited context. (2) The psychological molding of Black People predisposes the best educated among Us to be anti-Black: anti-Black nationalism, anti-Black centric, anti-Black whatever. (3) In addition to being victims of racism, Black People in the United States demonstrate all of the qualities of a people who have been victimized by colonialism.
Lesson 11 will concentrate on excerpts from various chapters
of Black Skin, White Masks. Think about the following issues
as you study and learn.
(1) What does Fanon mean when he refers to "a re-structuring
of the world?"
(2) Why is the "reality of the Negro" [Black] detrimental
to "the cultural crystallization" of the white world?
(3) What is meant by putting up substantial resistance to the
white world or mythology? Who is capable of doing this?

Lesson 11: To Be Healthy Again [Audio Version]
p. 82 (The solution) implies a re-structuring
of the world
Conclusion p. 187 It is my belief that a true [Black] culture
cannot come to life under present conditions.
What does Fanon mean when he says
"present conditions." In one sense, he means as long
as Black People strive to turn themselves into non-Black people.
That is an impossible solution, a neurotic solution. In another
sense, "present conditions" refers to the reign of white
power. We must end the reign of white power, and that process
begins in Our minds and hearts. Black individual by Black individual
must break away from white power psychologically and spiritually,
and use that as a first step toward establishing a Black reality
that will be beneficial to Black People. It is not essential that
every Black individual go through this process before We can make
some worthwhile gains. However, the greater the involvement is
at an early stage, the easier it will be for Us to establish a
system that will benefit the masses of Black People. However,
a "re-structuring of the world" is necessary. That means
an end to white power in Our minds and hearts, and an end to white
power in the political and economic sense.
Conclusion p. 203 An authentic [real] grasp of the reality of the Negro could be achieved
only to the detriment of the cultural crystallization [of
the white world].
White power thrives because We, Black People, are unsure of who
We are and dubious about what We can accomplish as a People. Once
We stop playing Ourselves cheap, white power will not be able
to thrive at Our expense. Instead of giving the best of Ourselves
to white power, We can give the best of Ourselves to Black Power.
That alone will be a terrible blow to white power and white power
advocates.
Why is it that the "reality of the Negro" [Black] can
only come about "to the detriment of the cultural crystallization"
of the white world? Because much of the white mythology relies
on the degradation of Blackness, the Black reality and Black People.
Once Black People put up substantial resistance to the white lies,
cracks will appear throughout the white armor, white weaknesses
will be obvious to everyone and white power will lose its aura
of invincibility and superiority. However, Black individuals who
have fallen into the white trap will be slow to accept the "reality
of the Negro" [Black]. Only normal Blacks, balanced Blacks,
should be expected to accept this reality and project it to the
world in real ways. [Top]
