Read the information that follows. In order to benefit the most from this course, you must constantly keep the following points in mind and refer to them frequently: (1) 50 years after the writing of Black Skin, White Masks, Black People in the United States still perceive of their potential and capabilities within an unnaturally or abnormally limited context. (2) The psychological molding of Black People predisposes the best educated among Us to be anti-Black: anti-Black nationalism, anti-Black centric, anti-Black whatever. (3) In addition to being victims of racism, Black People in the United States demonstrate all of the qualities of a people who have been victimized by colonialism.

This class will concentrate on selected excerpts from Black Skin, White Masks. Think about the following issues as you study and learn.
(1) Is it reasonable to reduce the choices of Black individuals to two?
(2) What does Fanon mean when he refers to "the real source of the conflict?"
(3) What do "the values that constitutes a human world" have to do with the psychological disposition of Black People in the United States?

Lesson 9: Black Responses to White Racism: Unreasonable or Normal? [Audio Version]

p. 37 When students from the Antilles meet in Paris, they have the choice of two possibilities:
----- either stand with the white world... and incline to a certain degree of universality in their conclusions
----- or to reject Europe, Yo, and cling together in their dialect [the Black world]...
There are only two choices for Black individuals: (1) to accept their essence, side with Black People and tie their destiny into the destiny of Black People, or (2) to deny / de-emphasize their essence and buy into the white mythology. Black individuals whose psyche is in tact cling to the Black world. Black individuals whose psyche has been impaired try to prove that Black People can represent whiteness just as effectively as white people. Black individuals whose psyche has been impaired try to prove that Black People can be just as white as white people. That is a crazy course of action.
p. 100 My objective, once his motivations have been brought into consciousness, will be to put him in a position to choose action (or passivity) with respect to the real source of the conflict
To choose action or passivity with respect to the real source of the conflict. Too many Black individuals are unable to determine what the real source of the conflict is because they have allowed the mythology of whiteness to seduce them. As a result, they assume that Black People are the real source of the conflict, but that is not the case. The real source of the conflict is found in white people, white society and the general imbalances associated with the white mythology.
The real source of the conflict, in psychological terms, is social. It is effective because Black People allow white power to be the dominant force in their lives. Black individuals who go to psychiatrists or attend white inclined counseling programs are wasting their time. Instead, they need to be getting an in depth understanding of Black-white relations in the United States of America. That understanding will eliminate most of the imbalances that make too many Blacks dysfunctional or functionally illiterate.
So the balanced Black rejects the white mythology, not Blackness. The balanced Black rejects values associated with whiteness, not the Blackness. The balanced Black emphasizes, identifies with and promotes Black standards, not white ones.

Black individuals who have bought into the white mythology devalue the concept of Black brotherhood. They take on the same fake universality that whites promote in order to keep Us confused and divided. What they fail to realize is that whites can promote "universality" and remain in power, while Blacks who promote the same will remain powerless.
Black individuals who ally themselves with whiteness have lost the desire to recognize themselves as part of a compassionate whole. They are out of balance with themselves, their people and nature. That is typical of all individuals who are more or less handicapped.
p. 223 To educate man to be actional, preserving in all his relations his respect for the basic values that constitute a human world, is the prime task of him who, having taken thought, prepares to act.
For normal people, education and actions go hand in hand; people are educated so they can recognize when actions are necessary and function accordingly. But individuals who focus in on an unworthy objective lose the ability to recognize what they should recognize. Additionally, they lose the ability to act outside of parameters defined by those whom they imitate. such is the case with psychologically inept Blacks.
Respect for the values that constitutes a human world is the objective of normal people. Black individuals in the United States who are unbalanced are overly concerned about adjusting to white standards and proving themselves worthy of inclusion in a white dominated schema. They are out of their mind, and they have a warped concept of human values. [Top]
