Deconstructing White Power: Resist and Manage the Fear Reflex [AudioVersion]
RESIST AND MANAGE THE FEAR REFLEX
1. Do you think Black People in the United States of America fear white power?
2. If so, do you think that fear is justified?
3. If so, do you think that fear has hampered the development of Black People as a serious political force?
RESIST AND MANAGE THE FEAR REFLEX
None of Us want to die or suffer and few of Us want to experience the barbarism that the USA will temporarily plunge into once We start fighting back seriously against white power America. But you know what? Sometimes you gotta do what you got to do. White power America has systematically demonstrated how cruel white people and their paid stooges can be, and that has left Us a little bit scared. What We need to do is show white America that We can be cruel too. We need to put some fear in their hearts and We don't have anything to lose by initiating the process.
That's right: We don't have anything to lose. When We protest in the manner they want Us to, We get killed, physically hurt, threatened, tortured, underpaid, fired, denied due process, framed, incarcerated, ridiculed and taken for granted and-- We lose respect for Our own selves. When We protest in the manner they want Us to, We have a greater tendency to release resentful energy that builds up inside of Us against Our own people, to brutalize and wreak havoc within Our own families and communities. We have to stop that madness. We are in a war because white power America has declared war on Us, and all of the casualties are on Our side because We are acting like We are not supposed to fight back. We need to start fighting back. We need to resist and manage the fear and start using the same weapons white power uses against Us, against white power.
Intelligence is what you do, not what you know, and fear reduces a person's ability to make an intelligent decision. Intelligent people fight back because those who fight back suffer less than those who do not. Why? Because those who fight back are dangerous targets, while those who don't fight back are safe targets. Abusers are reluctant to attack a dangerous target because a dangerous target might kill or injure them first. So the question for Us becomes, "Are We going to be safe targets or dangerous targets?" Are We going to be sitting ducks or pit bulls? Are We going to act like helpless victims or warriors who are tired of white power's crap? If We resist and manage the fear element, the answer is obvious.
How can a white cop feel at ease shooting an unarmed Michael Brown in a completely Black neighborhood in front of hundreds of Black persons? He was just about the only white person there! What made him feel that he could do that and get away without being attacked by some of those Blacks who didn't like him and didn't think what he did was correct? Why? Because those Black persons were conflicted; in part scared of not acting in a way others would think is acceptable, and in part scared they would pay a steep price if they attacked a white cop. But you know what? We have been paying a steep price for hundreds of years regardless of how We act and whether or not We attacked, and will continue to do so. Those who are handcuffed by fear will think "I'll be damned if I do," but those who resist and manage the fear will think "I'll be damned if I do and damned if I don't, so I might as well go for it."
We have to resist the fear We are feeling and manage it to the point where We can respond intelligently. Remember: intelligence is what one does, not what one knows. We know what happens when We don't fight back: We get killed, physically hurt, threatened, tortured, underpaid, fired, denied due process, framed, incarcerated, ridiculed and taken for granted and-- the worst of all-- We lose respect for Our own selves and take it out on people in Our own community. It's time for Us to stop taking it out on Ourselves. Each Black person needs to make a greater effort to resist the fear, refuse to let it determine what Our response will be, and start demonstrating how intelligent We are.
